Strengthening Our Community
Whatlington Community Connectors
The idea of setting up a group and website to drive community engagement was born out of a realisation that the village could be doing more to bring people closer together.
Whatlington does have successful events, at the Royal Oak, the Church and the Village Hall, many of which are much loved and longstanding – the pageant, fete and film club for instance. But there could be more – events and clubs of general or specific interest as well as organisations that are there to help those
who may be struggling with loneliness, poor health or lack of
opportunity to get out and meet people.
Whatlington presents many challenges when it comes to boosting a sense of community –no village green, no school, shop or post office, no pavements on which to stand and natter. But we have a pub, a church, a village hall, a newly-energised parish council and a latent spirit on which to build. On the
whole, we’re a pretty friendly bunch.
Many years ago there existed the Village Fund: a group of
residents that acted as a touchstone for community events,
helping to organise or even fund activities from firework
displays to children’s parties. Nowadays there is no group that exists to do a similar job-that’s what the Connectors are hoping to become.
This website is the first activity towards that aim. But it’s early days! Amanda Davis, Anne Smith, Sandie Sullivan, Carol Turner and Steve Turner are the first of the Connectors but there is room and opportunity for others, with passion and ideas, to join us.
